Roma's Work Experience Week at DCA PR

The DCA team were recently joined by Roma for a week of work experience. Interested to learn more about marketing and public relations, she partnered up with the Social Media team. As part of her time here, Roma has written the below blog on her experience and what she has learnt.

First Day of Work Experience

I first enquired about having a work experience placement at DCA in March. With a prompt reply, they said I could join them for the week. I picked this work experience placement because I am very interested in Business Studies which is a GCSE option of mine. When completing different sections of coursework, I enjoyed the marketing and advertising social media aspects of the course. This is why I believed that DCA would be the perfect place for me to complete my work experience.

On the first day, I arrived at 8:30 am and was introduced and welcomed by the team. Everyone was so lovely which helped me to settle in for the week ahead of work experience.

The Social Media Manager, who I have been with for most of the week, first showed me the monitoring work she must do for various companies. This included replying to various comments on social media. The weekly team meeting allowed me to see the type of things they would discuss and the ways to interact with different colleagues.

After lunch, I sat with the Creative Director, learning about the different ways of editing. He was working on a video for a brand and had been asked to make edits for the client. He explained to me the process of a video being approved and how to use different tools on the editing software.

I then finished my day starting to create a content plan for different clients with the Social Media Manager’s Guidance. This included scheduling dates of when numerous posts were to be released.

My Week of Work Experience

For the rest of the week, my work experience at DCA was thoroughly enjoyable. I completed similar tasks to the first day, getting to explore all factors of work at DCA.

On one of the days, I was able to leave the office and create some content for a client. I was able to creatively decide what pictures and angles would be the most eye-catching for the audience. This type of work experience helped me grasp the type of things DCA need to do for their clients.

I also sat with the PR Account Manager who showed me some previous press releases she had done, talking me through each one and making sure I understood the kind of work she does.

Throughout the whole week, however, I was mainly focused on the social media side of the business. I was creating different post templates and content plans while also looking at the technical side of social media. This meant looking at things like impressions and engagements from the audience of different posts to see what was popular.  This is mainly what I wanted my work experience to include as it is what I was most interested in.

What I Learnt

My work experience week taught me lots of new things providing me with skills I can take on into the future. Before arriving, I was dreading work experience. However, it allowed me to see what the working life is like. I have learned a lot about the job and learned skills such as editing and creating on Canva, planning, blog writing, and uploading on WordPress. I have also learned the importance of communication and the behaviour needed to interact with clients and colleagues. Work experience has shown me what an office-style job entails as it is completely different from the structure of school I am used to.

Overall, I am grateful to have had this experience and will be taking everything I have learned into my future career. The team here at DCA have been amazing mentors guiding me through the week helping me with each task whilst also giving me the independence to make my own mistakes and learn from them.
